While the word Gospel probably comes from an Anglo-Saxon term meaning
the narrative of God, it is the rendering of the Greek ευαγγελιον (euangelion),
meaning good message. What is this good message?
God is the creator of all in the universe. He and He alone is morally pure and perfect; yet He is also loving and cares for His creation and especially mankind.
All men and women have been created by God but have either ignored or rebelled against Him. By selfishly putting ourselves before God, we have all sinned against God and face due judgment by Him and eternal separation from Him.
Jesus Christ is both God and Man, perfectly God in human flesh. He was sent by His Father in Heaven to make plain to us how God wants us to live, namely to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves. Jesus willingly died on the cross in order to take on Himself God's just punishment for our sins. But He did not stay dead; He rose bodily from the grave and is alive with His Father in heaven. Jesus wants us to trust Him and believe in Him, and thereby be forgiven of the penalty of our sins. Without that forgiveness, a person will be eternally separated from God. Through His Holy Spirit, Jesus gives our lives joy, peace, and proper meaning.
